One of the things that makes our community so great is how much people care: about the town, about its civic life, about each other. Something that makes Media stand out is its unique and friendly businesses, many of them owned and operated by people who live in or near Media.
Transition Town Media‘s mission is to work at the community level to increase our resilience in the face of crises like this pandemic. Part of that resilience comes from having strong local businesses that add to the vibrancy of our town’s life. Because our businesses have had to stay closed due to the threat of contagion, they’re struggling to stay afloat and pay their bills. We’d like to help and you can, too! Here are some ways you can participate in Media Business Stimulus Week.
The website designers at Media Proper have, pro-bono, set up a gift card registry to provide a way for people to support their favorite businesses by buying a gift card now for use when the business opens again. This provides businesses with cash that they need now; it’s has already been a big help to many of our businesses. As an extra incentive, during Media Business Stimulus Week—Fri, May 22nd-May 29th—you can purchase these gift cards at a 20% discount! When you select a $25 gift card, for example, it will only cost you $20 but you’ll receive the full $25 value.
Transition Town Media will contribute the extra $5 and the business will get the full $25. Gift cards are each available in $25 increments from $25 to $200. Each is available for 20% off.

Buy them now while the discount lasts! The 20% discount offer will be in effect for a week or until the funds run out. To get the discount, use the promotion code BIZSTIM20.
The discount can only be used once by each user so that as many people can get discounted gift cards as possible. Let’s pitch in and help Media’s businesses stay strong during these difficult times!
Why Small, Local Businesses Matter
One of the best ways to boost a community’s economy is by supporting small, local businesses. They keep your money circulating locally, providing jobs for local people, paying local taxes, offering goods and services nearby, and reducing our need to travel or rely on long-distance transport. It allows us to have a personal relationship with those from whom we purchase—building trust and strengthening our community connections.
There are other ways to support your local businesses, too. Buy from local businesses as often as you can. Many restaurants are still open for take-out—treat yourself to a meal and leave a big tip! Develop a habit of buying locally and pledge to spend a certain percentage of your monthly purchases in your town. The 3/50 Project has useful information and tips for buying locally. Let us know what your plans are for supporting our local economy by emailing us at [email protected].
