Zero Waste

Zero Waste

Mission Statement

We encourage and support Greater Media residents and businesses to reduce their waste through composting, recycling, repurposing and reusing goods as well as reducing the amount of goods bought, particularly single-use plastic items.

What is Zero Waste?

Our purpose is to help residents and businesses reduce waste through composting, recycling, repurposing, and avoiding the purchase of products that will end up in the waste stream.

We research best practices and work with Media Borough and Delaware County to introduce them locally. We aim to:

  1. Reinforce residents’ understanding of:
    • What and how to recycle.
    • The concept of Circular Economy
    • The concept of Zero Waste
  2. Recognize how Greater Media is already moving toward these efforts.
  3. Point to directions and next steps Greater Media can take to further develop them.
  4. Put the Zero Waste group in touch with a larger circle of people interested in recycling, Zero Waste, and circular economy.
  5. Engage the community in an active involvement with these ideas and goals.
  6. Advocate for Zero Waste plans and policies and assist local government in developing and implementing them.

We raise awareness of Zero Waste concepts by means of the TTGM and Media Borough websites, newsletters, and social media, and by participating in tabling events such as the Media EcoFest, Open Streets, and public forums. Long range, we will expand our mission to include a wide range of sustainable practices in the Borough and in the County.

Our regular meeting date is the 4th Tuesday of each month at 7pm. We meet via Zoom. If you’d like to join us, email Sari for the Zoom link.

Impact Highlights

Working with the Media Environmental Advisory Council (EAC), we helped develop a residential food waste composting program for Media Borough with weekly curbside pickups, composting food and yard waste at Linvilla Orchards

We also worked with the EAC to promote an ordinance limiting use of single-use plastic in Media businesses and researched alternatives to plastic for the businesses.

We partner with the Delaware County Office of Sustainability on researching Zero Waste best practices for the County’s Sustainability Plan and are currently working with them on reducing food waste in food service industries.

Got Methane?

Methane (CH4) is a greenhouse gas that is 28-30 % more potent than CO2.  That makes it a big concern.  According to the UN’s Climate and Clean Air Coalition, “Reducing human-caused methane emissions is one of the most cost-effective strategies to rapidly reduce the rate of warming and contribute significantly to global efforts to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C. “  →
