Tree Lovers Collective

Tree Lovers Collective

Mission Statement

The Tree Lovers Collective was started in 2023 by a group of tree enthusiasts in the Greater Media area. The group is examining data and laws surrounding our trees, to ensure that the trees are well-represented in human decisions.

Here’s a link to the interactive map which is depicted above.

The group seeks to pursue three primary goals:
(S) Save the trees that already exist.
(A) Advocate for the trees in our community.
(P) Plant new trees to increase our canopy.

The S.A.P. acronym captures the spirit and intent of the group, which uses data-driven information to educate and inform decision makers. The group is also advocating for laws to protect heritage trees and incorporate a stronger consideration of trees when land development is taking place.

The group coordinates closely with the Tree Tenders Initiative.

Another Neighbor is Lost

We had just concluded our meeting of the Tree Lovers Collective, and we stepped into the brisk, sunlit streetscape on Front Street in Media Borough. A chainsaw growled down the block from us. The four of us looked up and saw the cranes and cherry pickers. A tree was “being removed”. “Oh no,” said one of us quietly.

Impact Highlights

As of 2024, the group has engaged student groups at Bryn Mawr College and Swarthmore College to survey the canopy in a six-block section around the Delaware County Courthouse. The survey has been used to compute the benefits of the trees including:

  • Rainwater capture
  • Stormwater management cost reduction
  • Carbon sequestration (carbon capture)
  • Oxygen generation
  • Cooling buildings
  • Mental and physical well being
  • The group has also begun to survey local ordinances regarding trees to see if the Media Borough ordinances can be improved.
  • Three of the group members have been accepted as members of the Media Borough Shade Tree Commission.
