Air Pollution: How Dangerous is it?

Air pollution—how dangerous is it?  You may be surprised to learn Pennsylvania led the country for the highest number of premature deaths per capita caused by air pollution in 2020. 

It’s important to take air pollution seriously, because it is harmful to your health.

What’s Wrong with My Swamp Milkweed?

Have you wondered what is causing milkweed leaves in your garden to look diseased?  The discoloration on the milkweed in the photo looks like a disease, but is actually caused by ground level ozone (GLO). GLO is a combination of pollutants emitted by cars, power plants, industrial boilers, chemical plants, and refineries.

Ground Level Ozone: The Silent Health Threat

Have you noticed that air quality alert days are increasing in our area?  We need to take these alerts seriously.  The alerts include ground level ozone, particulate matter (2.5 micrometers and 10 micrometers), carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and wildfire smoke.  All these pollutants are harmful to our health, but I will focus on ozone in this blog.

Got Methane?

Methane (CH4) is a greenhouse gas that is 28-30 % more potent than CO2.  That makes it a big concern.  According to the UN’s Climate and Clean Air Coalition, “Reducing human-caused methane emissions is one of the most cost-effective strategies to rapidly reduce the rate of warming and contribute significantly to global efforts to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C. “
