Ahh, spring at last! But might this be the last year we see birds at our feeders or hear their lovely songs? Will we still see beautiful Monarchs and other butterflies in our gardens? And what about those cute bumblebees and adorable hummingbirds?
The answer is no if you or your neighbors continue to spray for mosquitoes or use pesticides on lawns. Those harmful chemicals are killing all the insects we attract to our native plant gardens. When there are no insects for birds to feed their babies, the babies die of starvation. This is truly a tragedy.
I am not being an alarmist. Destroying the web of life has consequences. If we continue to lose our wildlife, we will lose all life on Earth—including our own. That’s why our Biodiversity Group is working to secure a Rights of Nature law.
Remember Rachel Carson and her book, Silent Spring? Silent spring is almost here. I am seeing way less butterflies, bumblebees and birds on my property. You may have noticed the same thing. How can we reverse this devastating trend? By learning about this issue, sharing that knowledge with others, and asking them to share it too.
