In 2018 and 2019, Media Borough’s Environmental Advisory Council collaborated with Transition Town Greater Media and several other partners to conduct an Open Streets day. Many of the town’s key streets were closed to motorized traffic and open to walkers, crawlers, bikes and meanderers. Music played on corners, arts were created at spontaneous “chalk-drawing” locations, organizations had tables to showcase their work and provide fun activities for kids and adults alike. Most importantly, people met and chatted with their neighbors in a spontaneous and relaxed setting. From the Open Streets Frequently Asked Questions page… Open Streets encourages physical activity. They are about exploring your town in a new and fun way, highlighting existing brick and mortar businesses and civic assets, like museums and galleries and parks. Most importantly, Open Streets are entirely free and accessible. No start lines or finish lines. Participants can enter and exit the route wherever and whenever they wish.
