In July, 2009, Michael Brownlee sent us home from our Transition Training with an urgent message about food. He told us to rapidly relocalize the food system in our communities and plant a veggie garden, because a food crisis was coming down the pike in three years at the latest. When I look at the headlines these days, I can see it coming on like a tsunami. And the drought in our country is just the tip of the iceburg.
In a Business Insider article, commodities guru Jim Rogers states, “The world faces serious problems in agriculture. We are facing shortages of everything. The inventories are near historic lows so any problem will have an immediate, profound effect. We are facing a shortage of farmers so any problems will turn into even bigger.”
This is an issue that deserves our careful thought and attention. We are a global economy–what affects one area of the world affects us all. Do you know where your food comes from? Think about it. And forget strawberries in January and coffee from Colombia–you won’t be able to afford it.
Are you ready to consider a veggie garden now? If not now, when? It takes time for veggies to grow. Don’t like to work on your own? Talk to your neighbors and start a community garden in your neighborhood.
Looking for a career opportunity? Small farms are our future and we need young farmers who understand that industrial agriculture is passe.
