Composting
A TTGM Partnership with Media Borough
Media Borough’s Composting Program!
Transition Town Media partnered with Media Borough to set up a residential weekly kitchen scraps pickup. We researched municipal composting programs and did a feasibility study. Then we started with a pilot project with 100 families participating. The pilot expanded to 220+ homes for a second year.
Originally, pickups were being done by Kitchen Harvest and taken to Linvilla Orchards to compost. Finished compost is made available to participants on a regular basis. Once the pilots were complete in 2022, kitchen and yard waste began to be picked up weekly by the Borough Public Works Department, just like the trash and recycling pickups. The kitchen waste still goes to Linvilla Orchards and the compost is processed by Kitchen Harvest.
This project was conceived as a way to reduce the waste generated in Media, making beautifully processed compost with it instead, and thus completing the cycle of fresh food –> kitchen scraps –> compost –> veggie gardens –> fresh food!
If you’re a home owner in Media Borough, be sure to take advantage of this program and take all the smelly stuff out of your trash bucket and into a compost bucket! See this video to get inspired and visit the Media Borough Building during office hours to pick up your bucket. Find out more information about the program on the Borough website.
