I started volunteering at the FreeStore ten years ago. I found my happy place and kindred spirits at the store. I was already committed to a freecycle group when someone referred me to the FreeStore for an item I was searching for. I was hooked as soon as I walked in the door and felt called to help out. I was welcomed with open arms and many of my best friendships were formed.
I have had countless emotional interactions with FreeStore customers over the years. On one occasion, a couple came in looking for items for their apartment. They moved out of a homeless shelter and had absolutely nothing for their new home. They were carrying around a few items they had selected and seemed so tentative. They didn’t want to take too much and didn’t really know what they needed. Our volunteers swung into action. We gathered a starter set of items for them. They were so grateful and appreciative. We all cried together and I told them to come back the following week because new items would be donated.
Another time, a man came in to donate items that belonged to his wife. She had passed away a few years earlier and he had a hard time parting with her things. He found such happiness knowing that neighbors would adopt her items and cherish them. I have met many victims of house fires over the years—our volunteers listened and helped. Their resilience inspired me to work harder and show gratitude each day.
I keep coming back because I know we matter to community members and that my personal contributions are always valued. I never lived in Media, but I quickly learned that community is far-reaching and whatever we need it to be. I have bonded with customers, business owners, activists, public officials, and fellow volunteers.
