Discover the Bounty of Local Farms

April 23, 2024 by Sari Leave a Comment

Spring Farm Tours

Join the Food Group for a fun series of farm tours this spring, where you will have the opportunity to check out some of our community’s local organic vegetable farms.

  1. Red Hill Farm: Located in Aston, Pennsylvania, which spans 6 acres and proudly holds the distinction of being the first CSA* in Delaware County. Guided by organic principles, this farm is owned by Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia. A great mix of vegetables, herbs, flowers, fruit trees, and even a pollinator garden. Look out for rain barrels, solar panels, and  honey bees. CSA membership available.
  2. Urban Roots Farm: Located in Newtown Square, is a 26-acre CSA vegetable farm committed to growing delicious, chemical-free vegetables, strawberries, and flowers. CSA membership available.
  3. Penn State Brandywine Vegetable Garden: Beyond textbooks and lectures, the Penn State Brandywine campus harbors a thriving vegetable garden. Here, students engage in hands-on learning, cultivating a diverse array of veggies.

Why Support Local Farms?

  • Freshness: When you buy directly from local farms, you savor produce at its peak freshness. No long-haul transportation or cold storage—just vibrant flavors straight from the soil.
  • Community Resilience: Local farms are the backbone of our community. They create jobs, foster connections, and ensure a reliable food supply even during challenging times.
  • Preserve Open Space: By supporting local farms, we preserve precious open spaces. Farmland preservation contributes to a healthier environment, stronger communities and a more resilient future.

So mark your calendars, don your sun hat, and embark on a journey through the fields. Let’s celebrate the beauty of local agriculture together!
