Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)
This is a unique arrangement between consumers and farmers. You pay the farmer in advance for a share of the harvest and this makes you a member, or shareholder, of the farm. This partnership allows the farmer to provide members with a wide variety of fresh and local produce while receiving much-needed, early-season income. By joining, you make a commitment to support the farm and share the costs of production while establishing a connection with the food you eat, the land where it is grown, and the people who produce it.

Farmers’ Markets
A regular trip to a farmer’s market is one of the best ways to connect with our community’s food growers and producers. Meeting and talking to local farmers is a great opportunity to learn more about how and where food is produced. When we purchase direct, farmers receive more of our food dollars, we receive the freshest and most flavorful food, and local economies prosper.
Farmers’ Markets offer a variety of fresh, organic produce at fair prices. Many farmers carry products that are not technically “organic,” but have many low-priced foods that are pesticide- and herbicide-free. Farmers’ markets are also just plain fun for the whole family. Here, you can cultivate relationships with the people who make and grow the food you eat, and with your neighbors, becoming healthier in body, mind, and spirit.

Farms
Local food supports local families. The wholesale prices that farmers get for their products are low, often near the cost of production. Local farmers who sell directly to consumers cut out the middleman and get full retail price for their food—which helps farm families stay on the land and they’re less likely to sell farmland for development. You are helping to ensure that there will be farms in your community tomorrow. That is a matter of importance for food security, especially in light of an uncertain energy future and our current reliance on fossil fuels to produce, package, distribute, and store food.

Restaurants
Support our local restaurants that demonstrate that they care about both food quality and our community. Our resource guide is a list of suburban restaurants within 15 miles of Media that are committed to consistently source from local farms. Visit these restaurants and try seasonal dishes that highlight the best ingredients our SE Pennsylvania area has to offer while also supporting our local economy and the efforts of our farmers.

Retail
We are fortunate to have several locally-owned grocery stores and natural food stores that carry local and organic foods. Supporting these stores supports our local farmers. At many of the chain grocery stores, look for labels and signs that indicate locally-grown and locally-produced foods—including dairy and meats. And you can ask which foods are local. You can also ask your local grocery store to carry more fresh, local produce, and other foods from local vendors.
