Transition Town Media opens a FreeStore in Media

May 1, 2014 by Marie Leave a Comment

Transition Town Media is happy to announce that we will be opening a FreeStore on State Street (at the Methodist Church, 350 West State Street) beginning June 1, 2014. The FreeStore will be a place to give items that are no longer useful to you or your household, and to take (for free) items that you need or can re-purpose. We will accept small/mid-sized items: books, small appliances, artwork, small pieces of furniture, toys (in good condition), tools, electronic equipment in working order, kitchen items, knick-knacks and home decor. Clothing and food donations can be given to the clothing closet and food pantry in the same building (in the Methodist Church.)

We are also accepting donations of book-cases and display tables, chairs, and other items to outfit the store as a meeting area and reading space. Our hope is that this space will become a community meeting spot, a place to pick up a free book, gathering with your friends and talk to others in your community as much as a place to get free items that you need for your home.   If you can donate any of the items listed below please email [email protected].  We will be setting up the Free Store space Monday, May 26-Wednesday, May 28. We could used the following:

* Slatwall hardware — any and all. We have the slat wall.
* Free-standing shelves — 36″ and 48″ wide. Varying heights and depths welcome
* Table/Desk legs — like the kinds you might get from Ikea.
* Tables or table tops — approx 30″ x 60″
* Office Chair — one or two

Transition Town Media is a 501c3 and can provide donation receipts, if requested.

If you wish to volunteer for out set-up week or to staff the store once open, here is a sign up sheet for Summer volunteer hours: June – August 2014: http://vols.pt/3Xjogo.  The FreeStore staff will be all volunteer.  We need you!

We are hoping the the community will support us financially as well, as the FreeStore will be maintained and rent paid by donations. You can contribute to this project by using this form and indicating the type of payment you wish to make (repeated monthly or a one-time offer of support.)

This space will also become the Transition Town Media and Timebank Media office.

If you are interested in joining in this effort or donating items to the FreeStore, please contact Marie Goodwin ([email protected]).  You may begin dropping off donations of goods beginning Thursday, May 29th.  Stay tuned for guidelines on acceptable donations.

Thank you to the Methodist Church for offering us the use of this space at a reasonable cost so that we can serve our community. Also, a big thank you to Shareable for making the Media one of their “Sharing Cities” and supporting the Media FreeStore with a $500.00 grant. Our deepest thank yous for that support.
