We have a treasure in this town. Well, to be honest, we have quite a few of them, but sometimes it is a good idea to shine the light on one of them and talk a little about it. Our town has a really talented film-maker who lives and raises his family here. His name is Rich Hoffmann, and I’ve been proud to call him my friend for more than ten years. He has lived here for even longer. His films haven’t always been about local food, but lately, that seems to be his focus: the importance of the local food movement, the wonders of growing your own, and the importance of teaching our children the magic to be found there.
Transition Town Media is screening two short films of Rich’s — Fridays at the Farm and Watermelon Magic –this Sunday, May 5th. We thought International Permaculture Day was the perfect day to do this…to get people thinking about our local food system. Permaculture enthusiasts (known as “permies”) are committed to growing food in a sustainable, local, environmentally supportive way. The farms shown in these movies apply (and continue to advance) permaculture principles in their growing methods and land management. Many local people are becoming trained in permaculture design, and it is really fair to say that this is a growing trend in our community.
The event is also a potluck lunch, so bring a meal to share. There be a short lecture by local permaculture specialist Paco Verin, and several kids activities focused on local food and permaculture awareness.
We will ask for a $10.00 donation at the door to help support Rich’s work on this film. All money collected will go to Rich and his non-profit, Spring Garden Pictures, to finish Watermelon Magic and get it distributed.
